Dancing the Rainbow
Dancing the Rainbow is a system of creative and healing dance. You don’t learn any steps. You don’t have to be elegant or light on your feet. You may be someone who dances regularly or maybe you can’t remember the last time you danced. In other words Dancing the Rainbow is for everybody! There are no age limits. Children love it, so do their grandparents. And all ages in between. You do not have to be fit or able-bodied. Your dance is an expression of you, of your truth. The emphasis is not on looking beautiful, but in finding expression through movement of our deepest selves.
Dancing the Rainbow helps us to truly inhabit our bodies. Often we are so busy thinking, planning and rushing through life, that it can feel like we have left our bodies behind somewhere along the way. Through the dance we come to know our bodies in a new, deeper way.
At the same time Dancing the Rainbow in not a ‘quick fix’ of all our ailments and concerns. What it does is bring aliveness to our bodies and our souls. It can help us to see issues more clearly, that may have been limiting our lives. It can bring out our innate creativity, support us to speak our truth more clearly, help us to relax – or at least show us that we do need to relax.
Dancing the Rainbow works with the chakra system from Yoga. These ‘chakras’ are energy systems in the body, there are 7 main ones, each representing different issues of our lives. A series of eight classes would go through all seven chakras with time for introduction and integration.
A typical class lasts for 1 ½ - 2 hours. It starts with a gentle warm-up and goes on to movement and other exercises. These exercises may include drawing, collage, writing, massage, voice work. They are carried out in an atmosphere of safety and enjoyment. People usually describe the classes as ‘fun’, ‘enjoyable’, ‘thought-provoking’, ‘light-hearted’. A recent participant commented “After the class I felt fantastic, like I had had a half-day of pampering at a spa”!
A group can have a ‘taster session’, which would be a 2 hour class that would give participants an idea of this work, before committing themselves to an eight-session course.
